  • Gramex’s Sustainability: What Defines a Responsible Partner and Influencer?

    07.03.2025 Ella Jaakkola
What is Gramex’s new sustainability program really about? This series of articles explores the different aspects of the new program on a practical level.

Gramex actively promotes responsibility in the copyright and music industry through advocacy work.

The goal is a society where recorded music generates well-being, livelihoods, and added value for performers, producers, and users alike.

“The foundation of Gramex’s sustainability program is deeply rooted in communication,” says Gramex’s Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Sari Aalto-Setälä.

“We want to engage a broad range of stakeholders and encourage the entire industry to move together toward a more responsible future.”

Elevating the Potential and Value of the Music Industry

Gramex seeks to spark discussions about the value and appreciation of music in society. This topic is relevant for several reasons.

First, the music industry holds enormous economic potential for Finland’s national economy.

According to Aalto-Setälä, the content industry related to intellectual property is one of the fastest-growing sectors in OECD countries, with recorded music playing a key role in this expansion.

“The music industry has significant growth potential, but Finland has yet to fully capitalize on it. Instead of budget cuts, the sector deserves real investment.”

Second, the digital revolution has transformed how music generates revenue. While more music is available than ever before, the earnings from individual recordings have decreased dramatically.

Gramex works alongside other industry players to influence legislation and advocate for the rights of musicians and producers.

“On a broader scale, we need laws that genuinely protect copyright—even as technology evolves. It’s a matter of political will.”

Additionally, Gramex aims to encourage consumers to recognize the true value of music.

“A single song can hold immeasurable meaning for its listeners, encapsulating deeply personal and significant life experiences for millions,” Aalto-Setälä reflects.

“By ensuring fair compensation for music, everyone can help secure the future availability of high-quality and diverse music.”

    Shared Vision and Responsible Partnerships

The biggest changes happen through collaboration, which is why Gramex is committed to responsibility in all its partnerships.

“This is one of Gramex’s core values,” Aalto-Setälä emphasizes.

“We seek strong partnerships where all parties are included, open dialogue is encouraged, and differing perspectives are genuinely heard.”

Increasing societal polarization and inequality make collaboration more challenging. Gramex’s sustainability program sets clear partnership criteria to ensure values are upheld in practice.

“We expect our partners to commit to environmental sustainability, equality, fair pay practices, and transparent governance,” Aalto-Setälä summarizes.

To support this, a checklist has been developed as part of the sustainability program to guide evaluations.

“Sustainable and strong partnerships are built on responsible principles.”
