Gramex’s Sustainability: Towards Climate and Resource Smart Operations

Gramex’s core mission is to ensure that music producers and artists receive the compensation they deserve. The foundation for collecting and distributing royalties has always been equality and transparency.
Gramex aims to be one of the best and most responsible copyright services in the world.
The Sustainability Program 2025-2030, launched in February 2025, presents Gramex’s sustainability efforts in an easy-to-follow format. Active and transparent communication encourages the entire music industry to move toward a more sustainable future.
Calculating the carbon footprint – aiming for lower emissions
One of the key innovations of the sustainability program is measuring Gramex’s carbon footprint.
“The first calculation feels like detective work,” says Sari Lindström, Project Manager for the Sustainability Program. “I go through receipts and invoices, making further inquiries like examining the carbon emissions of hotels.”
The carbon footprint measurement also includes the travel of Gramex staff, referred to as “gramexlaiset,” which is tracked through a survey. Once the results are ready, Gramex will set concrete emission reduction targets and incorporate them into the sustainability program.
In addition to reducing the environmental impact of its own operations, Gramex works with other industry players to measure the carbon footprint of the entire digital music sector.
Less emissions, more circular economy
Gramex’s intangible production chain makes implementing and monitoring sustainability easier. Recycling and resource-smart procurement are central practices used to reduce environmental impacts.
“We have strong practices in place for recycling office supplies and furniture. We practice sustainable procurement, for example, by only purchasing intangible gifts. Additionally, we continuously reduce paper printing and minimize air travel. Gramex also supports commuting by bike through a bicycle allowance and offers employees electric bike options.”
Resource efficiency not only benefits the environment but also reduces work-related stress. When an organization’s values align with those of its employees, there’s no need to make constant compromises.
“When planning the sustainability program, we organized workshops where the entire staff could contribute and participate,” Lindström shares. “Engaging the staff in the sustainability program plays a key role in ensuring that the actions feel meaningful and become an integral part of Gramex’s operations.”
